Body Scan

The Withings Body Scan is a smart scale with a handle that measures weight, segmental body composition and an ECG. It suits people tracking muscle and fat through a training block. We pick it because its ECG function holds FDA 510(k) clearance and the battery lasts about a year.

Why we love it

It reads more than weight. Withings lists 14 ITO electrodes in the glass platform and 4 stainless steel electrodes in the handle, so it can break body composition down by segment.

The ECG has a clearance behind it. FDA cleared Withings Scan Monitor 2.0, the ECG function of Body Scan, under 510(k) K230812 in August 2023.

Reviewers rate it well. Tom's Guide, TechRadar and T3 each gave it 4 out of 5, and Tom's Guide found its segmental readings accurate in its own testing.

The proof

  • FDA cleared Withings Scan Monitor 2.0, the ECG function of Body Scan, under 510(k) K230812 on August 23, 2023. Source
  • A Withings-funded, peer-reviewed 2023 study of 147 patients found Body Scan's foot skin conductance matched a hospital nerve-test device with 0.91 sensitivity and 0.97 specificity. Source
  • Withings reports r = 0.99 for fat mass against DEXA in an 80-person 2025 study described on its own support site rather than in a journal. Source

What owners say

  • 4.1 out of 5 from 8,977 reviews on Amazon (Body Scan Black). Source, checked October 6, 2026.
  • 3.3 out of 5 from 269 reviews on Amazon (second listing). Source, checked October 6, 2026.

Worth knowing

Body composition, the headline use, has no independent peer-reviewed validation; the DEXA comparison is Withings' own. TechCrunch's first unit had a syncing fault and was replaced, and the second still missed some readings.

Best for

  • Tracking body composition
  • Left and right muscle balance
  • Home ECG readings

Questions

Is the Withings Body Scan worth it?

If you want segmental body composition and an FDA-cleared ECG in one scale, yes. Tom's Guide, TechRadar and T3 each rated it 4 out of 5, though all three flagged the price. At $379.95 on sale it costs more than handle scales without ECG.

Is the Withings Body Scan accurate?

Withings measures weight in 50 g steps, and TechRadar found it accurate to 50 g. For body fat, Withings reports r = 0.99 against DEXA in an 80-person study it ran itself, not in a journal. Tom's Guide found segmental readings accurate, while TechCrunch saw some unrealistic body composition readings.

Does the Withings Body Scan need a subscription?

No. Baseline metrics stay free in the Withings app. Withings+ is optional at $9.95 a month, with 1 month free on withings.com purchases. T3 argued Withings+ should come free at this price.

Is the Withings Body Scan FDA cleared?

Its ECG function is. FDA cleared Withings Scan Monitor 2.0, the ECG function of Body Scan, under 510(k) K230812 in August 2023. The body composition and nerve readings are not covered by that clearance.
