WHOOP

WHOOP is a screen-free fitness strap sold as a membership, from $199 a year for the One tier with the WHOOP 5.0 strap included. It suits athletes who plan training around daily recovery scores. We pick it for its 14-day battery, recovery-first app and broad owner base.

Why we love it

It is built around one daily question: how ready are you? CNET found the recovery score is where WHOOP shines.

The strap rarely comes off to charge. Tom's Guide still had 27% battery after two weeks, against WHOOP's 14-day rating, and CNET found WHOOP 5.0 lasts about two weeks against four days for WHOOP 4.0.

Sleep timing lines up with other trackers. Tom's Guide found WHOOP sleep and wake times matched an Oura ring and a Withings mattress tracker to the minute on several nights.

The proof

  • An independent 2025 study of 536 nights found WHOOP 4.0 agreed with ECG for overnight HRV at 0.94 concordance and resting heart rate at 0.91, behind the Oura rings tested. Source
  • In a 53-adult lab study, WHOOP 3.0 matched polysomnography on 86% of sleep and wake epochs and 60% of sleep stage epochs. Source
  • FDA 510(k) clearance K243236 (April 4, 2025) covers the WHOOP ECG Feature, which runs on WHOOP MG in the Life tier, not on the One tier's WHOOP 5.0 strap. Source

Questions

How much does WHOOP cost?

WHOOP is sold as a yearly membership with the strap included: $199 for One, $239 for Peak and $359 for Life, which uses the WHOOP MG device. There is no way to buy the strap alone. Two years on One costs $398.

Is WHOOP worth it?

For athletes who train by recovery, it can be. Owners rate the WHOOP 5.0 Peak listing 4.2 stars from 2,682 Amazon ratings, and Tom's Guide rated it 4 out of 5. Comparable screen-free bands sell for $99.99 to $199.99 with no required subscription, so you are paying mainly for the app.

WHOOP vs Oura Ring 5: which is better for recovery?

WHOOP leans toward training, Oura toward sleep. WHOOP charges about every two weeks and costs $398 over two years on One. Oura Ring 5 runs about $539 over two years, and in a 2025 study of 536 nights, Oura Gen 4 matched ECG more closely than WHOOP 4.0 for HRV.

How long does the WHOOP 5.0 battery last?

About two weeks. WHOOP rates it at 14 days, Tom's Guide still had 27% left after two weeks of wear, and CNET found WHOOP 5.0 lasts about two weeks per charge against four days for WHOOP 4.0.

Is WHOOP FDA cleared?

Only one feature, and only on one tier. FDA 510(k) clearance K243236 covers the WHOOP ECG Feature on WHOOP MG, sold in the $359 Life tier. Recovery and strain scores are not cleared, and FDA sent WHOOP a warning letter in July 2025 over Blood Pressure Insights.
