Image: TherabodyEditor's PickTheragun Prime (6th Gen)
The Theragun Prime (6th Gen) is Therabody's core full-size massage gun: 16 mm amplitude, 5 speeds and force meter lights, per its manual. It suits deep work at home, including hard-to-reach back muscles. We pick it because CNN Underscored named it its best massage gun after testing 16, and Garage Gym Reviews scores it 4.2 of 5.

Why we love it
It reaches deep. CNN Underscored found its 16 mm amplitude reached deeper than almost every other gun it tested, and it held up in a rough stall test.
Two testers named it their pick: CNN Underscored called it its best massage gun of 16 tested, and Garage Gym Reviews named it its best massage gun overall at 4.2 out of 5, scoring the triangular handle 5 out of 5 for ergonomics.
Theragun devices have been studied directly. A 2023 randomized trial of 20 adults found 2 x 60 seconds with a Theragun Pro4 raised hamstring range of motion 11.4% and cut tissue stiffness 6%; none of the studies tested the Prime itself.
Owners rate it 4.7 out of 5 from 104 reviews at Best Buy and 4.7 from 63 on Therabody's store.

- A 2024 Heliyon crossover study of 18 men found 90 seconds of Theragun Pro use before activity did not improve jump height or Y-balance scores. Source
- A 2023 systematic review of 11 massage gun studies found short-term gains in range of motion and flexibility but not in strength or explosive performance, with moderate risk of bias in 10 studies. Source

Questions
Is the Theragun Prime worth it?
For home use, yes, especially on sale. It lists at $329.99 and sold for $199.99 on October 6, 2026. CNN Underscored named it its best massage gun after testing 16, and Garage Gym Reviews scores it 4.2 out of 5. The trade-off is a thinner box: 2 attachments and no case.
Theragun Prime vs Hypervolt 3: which should I buy?
Pick the Prime for depth and the Hypervolt 3 for extras. The Prime has a 16 mm stroke, which CNN Underscored found reached deeper than almost every gun it tested. Hyperice's Hypervolt 3 lists at $249 with a 12 mm stroke, 5 heads, a case and about 4 hours of battery, per Hyperice.
Is the Theragun Prime part of the Theragun charger recall?
No. FDA's open Class 2 recall from June 2026 covers 584,224 charging cradles for the Theragun G4 PRO, a 4th Gen model, which can overheat and pose a fire risk. The Prime 6th Gen charges by USB-C cable and is not named. If you own a G4 PRO, Health Canada's August 2026 notice says to stop using that charger.
Does a massage gun improve performance?
The research points to flexibility, not power. Studies of Theragun PRO devices found better hamstring range of motion and flexibility, but 90 seconds before activity did not raise jump height, and another trial found no change in strength, power or endurance. A 2023 review of 11 studies reached the same split.
